Making the move from one location to another can be a demanding job. To make it easier on you, we've provided a few helpful moving tips below.

30 to 15 Days Before Moving

  • Make a list of every item you need to move
  • Estimate the number of packing cartons you will need and buy them
  • Call moving companies and compare prices
  • Consider arranging for insurance for your movables
  • Ask healthcare providers (including your veterinarian) for professional referrals and records
  • Get change of address moving kit from the post office
  • Have your children's transcripts forwarded
  • Arrange to have bills forwarded
  • Request that your credit bureau file be transferred
  • Ask your employer to forward W-2 and tax documents
  • For tax purposes, make records of all moving expenses, including items donated to charity
  • Arrange for disconnection of utilities at your old home and reconnection at your new location
  • If your car or other possessions are not fully paid for, notify your lending facility 

14 Days Before Moving

  • Pack one room at a time
  • Check with moving company to see if large appliances need to be prepared
  • If car is to be towed, arrange for tow bar with moving or truck rental company
  • Arrange transfer of important documents and jewelry

7 Days Before Moving

  • Arrange cancellation of newspaper and other deliveries
  • Arrange for cash, traveler's checks or official checks
  • Dispose of flammable items at appropriate area hazardous waste facilities
  • Separate out items to be moved in your car, including dental, medical, veterinary, insurance and school records
  • Arrange to have phone and utilities disconnected
  • Transfer insurance
  • Make hotel reservations if necessary

1 Day Before Moving

  • Pack a suitcase you can live out of for three days in your new home & include a first aid kit
  • Empty and defrost refrigerator and freezer and let them air dry for a day; deodorize large appliances with baking soda and coffee
  • Leave your old home keys with the appropriate person
  • Leave garage door openers and home and appliance instruction manuals in the house
  • Pack your phone book in an easily accessible location for quick reference

Moving Day

  • Give driver directions to your new address
  • After van is packed and weighed, determine final moving bill; make sure you have payment ready before the van is unloaded at your new address
  • Confirm arrival date and time
  • Sign and save copies of bill of lading
  • Check every room, closet and attic a final time; check locks on doors and windows
  • Pack vacuum last so you can reach it easily to clean your new home upon arrival
  • Supervise placement of your furniture and boxes
  • Upon arrival, make notes of missing or damaged items
  • Check electrical wiring, fuses and water turn-off valve
  • Start newspaper and other home deliveries
  • Have your will reviewed if you have moved out of the state in which it was drawn
