Gainesville is more than just another town...it's the place I've called home for 49 plus years. I've seen such amazing growth and opportunity over the years, and yet, the town still keeps its distinctive southern charm and energy.
The area has been my family's home for 7 generations, and that makes for some deep roots for me and my wife and children. Many of my childhood friends have either found their way back to town or long for the day they can. Gainesville has a way of grabbing your heart and never letting go, and it gives everyone a deep sense of community. It's a small town feel with many big town opportunities. From the Hippodrome Theatre where world class plays are intimately held, to the Cultural Arts facilities where many big name bands, comedians, operas, ballet, political speakers and more share their talents. There is of course big time athletics in town at Florida Field and the O'Connell Center and other venues at the University of Florida and Santa Fe College. There is always something going on, which makes for a lot of electricity in this North Central Florida treasure.
And in an hour, or two, in any direction you can find yourself in some amazing places. Whether its Orlando and all of the Disney World Parks, to the Atlantic Ocean and the sun and surf, to Cedar Key on the Gulf of Mexico for some of the world's best seafood, and world class shopping opportunities in Tampa and Jacksonville. Adventure surrounds us.
But what I love most about this slice of heaven is family. It's a place where my boy and girl thrive in education, and violin lessons, and cheer leading and gymnastics, track and field and so much more. The warmth of a community envelops their wishes and their dreams and turns them into reality. Its a place they will always call home and a place where a piece of their heart lives.
That is Gainesville...That is my home town.
